Rey or Ruby: Which Brawler Should You Choose for Free in Brawl Stars?
The October 31 Brawl Talk revealed two exciting new Brawlers coming to Brawl Stars in December: Rey and Ruby, the King and Queen of Toyland!
But there’s an interesting twist. These two Brawlers are designed to work together, with special abilities that activate when they’re on the same team. Even better, Supercell confirmed that players will be able to choose either Rey or Ruby for free during the Brawlidays season.
So, if you can only pick one, which should you choose?
Let’s compare their attacks, Supers, Hypercharges and unique abilities to find out which Brawler is the better choice for you.
Rey vs Ruby: Quick Comparison
| Feature | Rey | Ruby |
|---|---|---|
| Theme | King of Toyland | Queen of Toyland |
| Main attack | Marks enemies and charges damage | Throws a club and a diamond |
| Super | Locks onto visible enemies and fires | Creates an area that grounds enemies |
| Hypercharge | Reveals hidden and invisible enemies | Increases the size of her Super area |
| Special synergy | Heals Ruby | Heals Rey |
| Best suited for | Long-range pressure and targeting | Area control and countering tanks |
Both Brawlers have different strengths, so let’s look at them individually.
1. Rey: The King of Toyland
Rey is built around targeting enemies and rewarding players who can maintain their aim.
Main Attack: Mark Your Target
Rey’s main attack places a mark on an enemy. The longer he keeps that enemy in his sight, the more damage his attack deals.
This makes positioning and maintaining line of sight extremely important. Players who are good at tracking opponents and controlling open areas could get a lot out of Rey.
Super: Lock On and Fire
Rey’s Super marks enemies within his field of view. Once the targeting process finishes, he fires at the marked enemies.
He also receives a shield while aiming, making him harder to eliminate during the process. Players can activate the Super again to fire early rather than waiting for the full duration.
This ability could be particularly useful when several enemies are visible at once.
Hypercharge
Rey’s Hypercharge makes his Super even more dangerous.
It allows him to reveal enemies hiding in bushes or using invisibility, while applying a stronger mark.
This gives Rey an interesting advantage against Brawlers who rely on stealth or surprise attacks.
Who Should Choose Rey?
Rey could be the better choice if you enjoy:
- Keeping enemies in your line of sight.
- Dealing increased damage through sustained targeting.
- Applying pressure from a distance.
- Revealing enemies hiding in bushes.
- Playing a more precision-focused style.
2. Ruby: The Queen of Toyland
Ruby has a different approach to combat. Instead of focusing on one target for increased damage, she uses area control and attacks that can punish enemies who get caught in her attack pattern.
Main Attack: Club and Diamond
Ruby throws two projectiles: a club and a diamond.
They travel in a figure-eight pattern, and if both projectiles hit the same enemy, they deal additional damage.
This means players need to understand the projectile paths and position their attacks carefully to maximise damage.
Super: Area Control
Ruby creates an area that grounds enemies and sends swirling projectiles toward opponents inside it.
This can make it difficult for enemies to move freely and gives Ruby an interesting way to control important areas of the map.
Her Super could be especially useful against aggressive teams and Brawlers that want to get close.
Hypercharge
Ruby’s Hypercharge increases the size of her Super area and makes its attacks spread wider.
This gives her more coverage and potentially allows her to affect multiple enemies more easily.
Who Should Choose Ruby?
Ruby could be the better choice if you enjoy:
- Controlling areas of the map.
- Punishing enemies who group together.
- Using projectile patterns to deal damage.
- Stopping aggressive opponents.
- Playing around Super placement and area denial.
3. The Biggest Difference: Their Special Team Synergy
This is what makes Rey and Ruby particularly interesting.
They are the first Brawlers whose abilities have special synergy when they are on the same team.
Here’s how it works:
Rey’s interaction with Ruby:
- Rey can heal Ruby with his main attack.
- Rey moves faster when travelling towards Ruby.
Ruby’s interaction with Rey:
- Ruby can heal Rey with her main attack.
- Ruby moves faster when travelling towards Rey.
Importantly, these healing interactions are specific to their partner. They aren’t general healing abilities that work on every teammate.
This creates an interesting team combination. Having both Brawlers together could make them more effective than playing them separately.
However, if you normally play solo or don’t coordinate with teammates, you shouldn’t choose one just because of their special partnership.
4. So, Which Brawler Should You Choose?
Here’s my recommendation based on their revealed abilities.
| Your playstyle | Recommended Brawler |
|---|---|
| You prefer targeting enemies from a distance | Rey |
| You enjoy area control | Ruby |
| You want to reveal invisible enemies | Rey |
| You want to counter aggressive opponents | Ruby |
| You prefer precision-based attacks | Rey |
| You prefer controlling enemy movement | Ruby |
My Recommendation: Ruby or Rey?
Choose Rey if you prefer precision and long-range pressure.
His increasing damage, targeting Super and ability to reveal hidden enemies give him an interesting toolkit. He could be particularly valuable against teams that rely on bushes and invisibility.
Choose Ruby if you prefer controlling the battlefield.
Her projectile pattern, grounding Super and larger Hypercharge area make her an interesting option for players who enjoy controlling space and stopping enemy advances.
At this stage, I would give Ruby a slight edge for players who prefer a more control-oriented playstyle, while Rey looks more appealing for players who enjoy precision and targeting.
But this is a playstyle recommendation, not a confirmed competitive ranking. We need actual gameplay, balance information and win-rate data before declaring a winner.
5. When Are Rey and Ruby Coming to Brawl Stars?
According to the October 31 Brawl Talk, both Rey and Ruby are scheduled to arrive in December 2026, during the Brawlidays season.
Supercell confirmed that players will be able to choose either Rey or Ruby for free during Brawlidays.
However, the developers haven’t yet explained the exact claiming process or how players will unlock the other Brawler.
So, if you’re planning to get one for free, keep an eye on the upcoming Brawlidays announcements.
Final Verdict
Rey and Ruby both look interesting, but they offer two very different approaches to gameplay.
- Rey: Precision, targeting and long-range pressure.
- Ruby: Area control, projectile patterns and stopping aggressive enemies.
If you’re unsure which one to choose, my advice is to wait until their gameplay is available and their real strengths become clearer.
And if you have friends who are also choosing one, there’s another option: one of you can pick Rey and the other Ruby, allowing you to experience their special team synergy!
